This is a summary of a podcast we recently recorded. Give it a listen if you want to hear us deep-dive the importance of each of these!

It's September. School is starting. Kids are getting into routines. The offseason is beginning. This is a critical period for development. We brainstormed a list of things we think are critical to consider for maximizing the next several months of training and practice. Here are 6 ultra important things to keep in mind when planning out your offseason!

  1. The Big Picture

Every player needs to have an honest understanding of where they are and where they want to be. If you don't understand where you exist on that spectrum you will have a hard time actually addressing the weaknesses and getting yourself to become the player that you want to be. This requires brutally honest reflection on your previous season and an analysis of what your current strengths and weaknesses are. You also need to decide what you want to be! This determines how much work you are willing to put in and is going to define what a successful offseason looks like.

  1. Logistics

How many days a week can you train? What access do you have to gym's or training facilities? What are your other responsibilities. Everybody has a different training economy and only so many resources they can allocate toward baseball. Taking stock of all of these things is critical to building a successful plan.

In this part of the podcast Chris and Bobby talk a lot about their own offseason routines during different parts of their life and what factors altered their training.

  1. Quantity vs. Quality of Work

Quantity of work is a requirement...but it can also be a trap. So often hitters think that by showing up everyday and trying to take as many swings as possible is guaranteeing positive development. But this is only part of the equation. If you're not focussed on the right things, executing with intent, and being fully present mentally then its unlikely you're going to get much better. Don't fall into the trap of "more is better". You should be constantly pushing yourself to improve the quality of your work. Hold yourself to a high standard and always be hungry for better solutions.

  1. Sticking to a Plan vs. When to Deviate

Assess early and often. Check in on your big picture goals. If you have a clear idea of where you are at, where you want to go, and how you are getting there then you are probably on the right track. Its when any of those things start to get blurry that you need to change it up. Having purpose and direction will give you conviction, and knowing what you're trying to do will help you have the right focus. Keep all of these things in mind as you fight through the dog days!

  1. Balancing Different Difficulties of Work

Over a long period of time you're going to need to balance doing work that makes you feel good and work that is challenging you. There are days it should be easy and days it should be hard. Keep your focus on the ultimate goal and don't get complacent, but don't be so ruthless in challenging yourself that you're feeling disappointed all of the time.

Bobby and Chris reference Michael Jordan stories a ton here as an example of how a winner's mentality can up your level of preparation.
